Broccoli Spinach Kadalai paruppu Kootu

>> Wednesday, May 26, 2010

I usually like to combine two or more veggies and make a combo dish out of them, so that it saves our time of cooking two separate dishes, still leaving us with the same nutrient values and taste of those vegetables. In that order, I came up with the broccoli spinach kadalai paruppu kootu.

Things needed
Broccoli - 1 whole flower (chopped)
Spinach - 1 whole bunch (chopped)
Kadalai paruppu/Bengal gram dal - 1Cup
Onion - 1 medium sized (chopped)
Tomato - 1 medium sized (chopped)
Garlic pearls - 3nos.
Jeera/Cumin seeds - 1tbsp
Coconut - 1tbsp
Green chillies - 2nos.
Dhaniya/Coriander seeds - 1tbsp
Salt - to taste

Soak kadalai paruppu n warm water for about 15minutes. Add onions, tomatoes garlic to the dal and cook it on medium flame with lid closed until the dal is 3/4 cooked. Meanwhile, grind coconut, green chillies, jeera and coriander seeds into a coarse paste. When the dal is almost done, add broccoli and spinach to it, as these vegetables won't take much time to cook.
Cook the vegetables for 5 minutes, then mix in the ground coconut paste to it and cook for another 5 minutes. At this point adjust for salt and also check the consistency of the kootu. Let it be bit watery, and it would be good both with rice or chapatis.
 Simple and easy cooking !!!
