Drumstick bengal gram kootu/ Murugankai kadalai paruppu kootu

>> Thursday, August 5, 2010

My hubby was asking me to make this kootu for a long time. But it's not usual to get drumstick here. Luckily we found some fresh drumsticks in the nearby Chinese store and my hubby made me to make this kootu for our lunch Yesterday. Its a very simple and healthy dish and the taste of the kootu comes from the flavor of drumsticks that are cooked slowly along with the dal.

Things needed
Drumstick - 2 nos. ( Cut into 2inch pieces)
Bengal gram/ Kadalai paruppu - 1/2 Cup
Jeera/ Cumin seeds - 1 Tsp
Mustard seeds/ Kadugu - 1 Tsp
Dry red chilly - 1 no.
Onion - 1 no. medium sized (Finely chopped)
Tomato - 1 no. medium sized ( Finely chopped)
Red chilly powder - 1 Tsp
Tumeric powder - a pinch
Coriander powder - 1/2 TspOil - 1 Tsp
Salt - To taste

Soak the bengal gram in warm water for 30 minutes. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and let it sizzle. Add bengal gram, drumstick, onions, tomatoes and cook closed for 20 minutes with required amount of salt. Then add chilly powder, tumeric, coriander powder and cook for another 15 minutes or until the drumstick is fully cooked and the mixture reaches the consistency of a kootu. The taste of the entire dish is in cooking the dal slowly along with the drumsticks, so that entire flavor of drumstick goes into the kootu.
Hot delicious kootu is ready to be served with chapathi or with rice. My hubby enjoyed the kootu rice with a liberal amount of ghee on it.. :)
This goes to Vegetable marathon - Drumstick event started by Anita's kitchen.
