Chilli Tofu

>> Saturday, November 13, 2010

Here comes the recipe for the simple and yummy chilli tofu I made for our lunch yesterday with fried rice. Thinking what to do with the pack of tofu I was having my fridge, I landed up with this dish. Tofu fried with few veggies like onions, bell peppers along with a touch of tomato ketchup results in a great side dish for noodles or fried rice. It goes well with chapathi also and can be fixed in less than 15 minutes. Extra firm or firm tofu will work great for this dish.

Things needed
Tofu - 1 Cup ( Cubed into bite size pieces. I have used firm tofu)
Bell peppers - 1 nos. ( Cubed)
Onion - 1 no. medium sized ( Cubed)
Ginger - 1 Tbsp ( Finely chopped)
Garlic - 1/2 Tbsp ( Finely chopped)
Green chilly - 2 nos. ( Roughly chopped)
Spring onions - 1/4 Cup ( Finely chopped)
Tomato ketchup - 1/8 Cup
Spicy Banana sauce - 1 Tbsp ( Can be replaced with hot sauce)
Sugar - 1 Tsp
Black pepper powder - 1 Tsp
Soy sauce - 1 Tsp
Corn starch - 1 Tsp ( Mixed with 1 Tbsp of water)
Oil - 2Tbsp

Heat a Tbsp of oil in a pan, add the tofu bites, soy sauce and fry until golden brown. Drain the tofu pieces on a tissue paper. In the same pan, add remaining oil, ginger, garlic, spring onions, pepper powder, sugar and fry few couple of minutes.
Now add onions, bell peppers, green chilly and fry until they get 3/4th cooked. Make sure not to turn them mushy.
Finally add in ketchup, banana sauce, corn starch and cook until the sauce turns thick and shiny. This will take just 2-3 minutes. For more sauce we can add little bit of water if needed. The salt present in the sauces will be sufficient for the dish.
Yummy, spicy and slightly sweet chilly tofu is ready to be served. This yummy dish goes to PJ's Tasty Tofu Treats and to Akila's DNSW - C event
